CBAM – Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism

CBAM – Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism

The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is the European Union’s tool to prevent carbon leakage by ensuring that imported goods are subject to the same carbon costs as products manufactured within the EU.

From October 2023, reporting obligations have already begun. By 2026, financial adjustments will apply to covered imports based on their embedded emissions.

CBAM initially targets imports in the following sectors:

  • Iron & Steel
  • Aluminium
  • Cement
  • Electricity
  • Fertilisers
  • Hydrogen
